Father Over Time

There’s so much to tuck into in this passage, but the main point here is that God uses our mistakes and is still sovereign. He is the God over time.

How many times in your life do you feel like you’re exactly where you need to be?

Not often? Me neither. So much of my life is spent wondering if I should be doing something different. Should I have spent the morning on that project? Should I have taken more advantage of the beautiful day outside? Recently I decided to give myself some time to just read, reflect, and journal. Over a period of several weeks, I realized in those small hours of time, here and there, unplugged and disconnected, God revealed glimpses into how he’s working. These connections point to God being the God of time. He created time and he rules over it.  If you’ve ever wondered if you’re not far enough along or haven’t done enough, this message is for you. God created time, which means He’s the one on the throne, directing how it should go. In one poignant example in Joshua 10, God stills the sun. This passage begins when Joshua has taken over as leader of the Israelites. He follows the commands Moses laid out for the nation, a nation where God dwelled with His people. A few years into their new homestead, an enemy nation deceives the Israelites, who, fearing and wondering if they’re going to make it in this new place, jump headfirst into a treaty. This all happens without asking for God’s guidance. In fact, they directly go against his commands by signing this treaty.  That enemy, now treaty-signed-friend-nation is being attacked, and the Israelites are under contract to go and defend them. God uses the mistake by the Israelites to again show that he is the God who dwells with them. Even though they made a mistake, God still shows up it and demonstrates his power, so much so that the sun stands still:

“The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since…Surely it was the Lord fighting for Israel” Joshua 10:13-14

There’s so much to tuck into in this passage, but the main point here is that God uses our mistakes and is still sovereign. He is the God over time.

Where are you afraid a mistake has already been done, an opportunity missed, an offer passed over and time is up? Do you not know? Have you not heard? God, your father, is Father over time.
